Lesotho’s defense minister resigns

MASERU – Lesotho’s Minister of Defence, Sentje Lebona has tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Thomas Thabane and the resignation is effective immediately.
Mr Lebona confirmed that he has resigned from his position and his letter was handed in to the PM’s office on Thursday for personal reasons.
He further indicated that there is a number of things that have led to his resignation but he could not disclose what exactly is the reason for him leaving his position except to say he would now prefer to only remain a Member of Parliament (MP) for Mohale’s Hoek.
He refuted allegations that his resignation is related to the instability that the leading ruling party in the coalition government, All Basotho Convention (ABC) is going through at the moment which saw former Minister of Tourism, Motlohi Maliehe being booted out of his ministerial office a month ago.
Mr Lebona however asserted that the said instability affects all, especially those in the party but was also quick to say the party is not a government unto itself so it cannot in anyway be a determining factor on whether or not people remain in their ministerial positions.
Mr Lebona emphasized that he was not forced into resigning but it was his own conscious choice and he is currently handing over to the relevant Principal Secretary (PS) although he has already vacated the office.
Information released by government’s Spokesperson, Nthakeng Selinyane stated that the minister has resigned from his post with immediate effect and the PM has since advised the King that Minister of Police, ‘Mampho Mokhele, be acting in the vacancy until a substantive holder of the portfolio is named.
This comes only three weeks after resignation of Minister of Forestry, ‘Mamotsie Motsie who also cited personal reasons such as health issues but later said she had a lot of family issues to attend to.
