Court officials steal M300k

MASERU – The Maseru Magistrate Court will on November 2, 2018 continue to hear a case in which two Thaba-Tseka Magistrate Court officials are charged with corruption and theft that involves over M300,000.
Maseru Resident Magistrate Polo Banyane is presiding over the case and the November sitting of the court will be in Thaba-Tseka. The previous sitting was held in Maseru from September 4, 2018.
According to the charge, the accused ‘Matieho Theoha and Mpho Damane who work for Thaba-Tseka court as Senior Clerk of Court and Clerk of Court respectively contravened the provisions of Section 21 (3) (a) of Prevention and Economic Offences Act No. 5 of 1999 as amended by amendment Act No. 5 of 2006.
It is alleged that the duo unlawfully and intentionally misappropriated and or embezzled M321,095.00 belonging to the government through the ministry of finance during incidents that happened at Thaba-Tseka Magistrate Court between 2013/2014 and 2015/2016 financial years.
Alternatively, the accused are said to have contravened the provisions of Section 59 (b) of Penal Code Act No. 6 of 2010.
In this case, the accused are alleged to have stolen the said amount of money during incidents that happened at the same time and venue as the above count.
Meanwhile, the crown has since led evidence of all its witnesses and the accused who pleaded not guilty to the charge will on November’s court sitting in Thaba-Tseka apply for their discharge.
