Soldiers accused of assaulting siblings

Maseru – Two members of the Lesotho Defence Force appeared before Maseru Magistrate Court on Friday on charges of assault which they allegedly committed in 2015.

The duo Nkesi Makoetje and Sergeant Lekhooa Moepi are facing two counts of assault; the crown alleges the incident happened at the maximum security prison facilities in Maseru on June 18, 2015.

The court heard that the two acted in concert and assaulted Mohapi Kapoko and Thulane Kapoko with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

Makoetje was granted bail on condition that he pays a deposit of M1 000, attends remands on set dates, attends trial to finality and does not interfere with crown witnesses and police investigations.

Makoetje was also given a condition not to leave the country without informing the police and to also report back to the same police when he returns.

On the other hand, Moepi did not ask for bail and said he is yet to meet with his Lawyer over the charges he is faced with.

In addition to these new charges, Moepi – who is currently detained at the Lesotho Correctional Services in Maseru – is also facing charges of the murders of former LDF Commander Lieutenant-General Maaparankoe Mahao, Khothatso Makibinyane, Molise Pakela and Lekhoele Noko. Lena
