Lesotho will participate in a seven-day World Urban Forum in Malaysia from February 7, 2018, the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship Information Officer Mrs. ‘Makena Setho-Letsie said.
Mrs. Setho-Letsie said her Ministry will represent the country at the Forum.
Mr. Habofanoe Lehana, the Chairperson of the United Nations (UN) Habitat for Humanity, who was appointment in October this year, will officiate the Forum.
She said: “The Minister, in his capacity as the chairperson of the United Nations (UN) Habitat for Humanity, will address the Forum on behalf of the African countries.”
She said the forum is intended to advocate for and raise awareness on sustainable urban development and advance the collective knowledge on sustainable urbanisation through inclusive open debates.
Its mandate is also to exchange experiences and best practices as well as further coordination and cooperation within and between different constituencies towards the advancement and implementation of the Habitat Agenda.
“The private sector has been advised to take part in the forum in an effort to market their goods and services, Lesotho will have stalls for exhibition of products at the forum,” she said.
The forum is expected to bring together a wide range of experts from different walks of life including local governments, non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations, research institutions and academics, private sector and media to mention a few.
This ninth session of the Word Urban Forum will be the first to be held after the Post 2015 Development Agenda Process and the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development – Habitat III in 2016.
The Habitat conference is a global legislative conference organised every 20 years to review and define the urban agenda and pave the way for UN-Habitat’s vision towards a new urban future.
