Nurse jailed 10 years for rape

The Maseru Magistrate Court on Monday slapped a 25-year-old Tlali Joseph Kolobe who works at Mabote Filter Clinic as a Midwifery Nurse with 10 years imprisonment without an option of a fine for rape.
The Court through Magistrate ‘Mamorojele Qoo passed the sentence today after same court last week convicted Kolobe.
Before delivering sentence, Magistrate Qoo asked Kolobe to mitigate but he instead said he has nothing to say except that he wants his case to be transferred to the High Court for review.
In this case, Kolobe of Ha-Thetsane was charged with contravening the provisions of Section 3 (1) and (2) read with Section 32 of Sexual Offences Act No. 3 of 2003 in that he unlawfully forced himself over a 31- year- old woman of Motsekuoa, Mafeteng who was seven months pregnant during the commission of the crime that happened at Mabote clinic on September 29, 2016.
Giving evidence in court, the complainant said she had gone for her normal check up at the clinic and had entered the room with Kolobe and that he had asked her to take off all her clothes after which she got onto the bed where Kolobe asked her to stretch her legs wide open.
The complainant also explained that while still lying on the bed, Kolobe unfastened his belt, unzipped his trouser and forced himself on her without her consent and raped her without a condom.
On the other hand, Kolobe pleaded not guilty to the charge and told the court in his defence that the victim was merely implicating him with something he did not do.
He also indicated that he only helped the victim who was his patient at the time.
