The second phase of the 2017 Household Energy Consumption Survey (HECS) conducted by the Bureau of Statistics (BOS) in the Ministry of Development Planning was successfully completed.
This is according to the Chief Statistician in the BOS, Ms. Ts’episo Thabane in an interview on Monday.
She stated that field work was completed on Thursday last week as scheduled. She indicated that the exercise was successful. She however pointed out that a report on the overall Survey including the first and second phases is expected to be available by March next year.
The first phase of the Survey which was conducted in July this year focused on energy consumption in Winter whereas the second one which was conducted last month focused on energy consumption in Summer.
At least 192 enumerators and 38 supervisors took part in the Survey which was conducted in different parts of the country whereby energy consumption in selected households was measured in order to determine the amount of energy used.
As part of preparation for the overall survey, the BOS conducted a pilot from January 23 to February 03, 2017 in selected households in Lithoteng, Maletsunyane, Machache and Maama constituencies which represent the rural, peri-urban and urban areas.
HECS is intended to avail baseline data for informed policy making which will be achieved through the establishment of energy usage at household level.
The BOS is mandated to set up a system for national official statistics on economic, social, demographic and environmental areas for the development of the country. They also collect, analyse and disseminate official statistics.
