Artists voice expectations from new government

Artists engaged in creative industries or handicrafts are requesting the newly in-coming government to find reliable market for products made by Basotho to enable them to address their socio-economic problems.
One of the Artists, Mr. Edward Tikiso, a local Mosotho who resides at Ha Thetsane in Maseru and has been engaged in creative industries for five years now said there are many Basotho who are engaged in handicrafts in the local communities but have no market for their products except to sell to the few tourists once in a while when they have visited Lesotho.
He said this when interviewed on the expectations of the artists from the new government that is yet to access office soon.
”We need a reliable market in an effort to contribute immensely towards the economic growth of the country,” he said.
Mr. Tikiso suggested that besides seeking the market opportunity, there should be Resource Officers who should rotate in different communities to identify best products that can be packed and sold to the international community through market.
He also encouraged his counterparts to ensure that while they increase their production, they should retain quality for the best market.
Mr. Tikiso also suggested that there should be toll-gates to make tourists pay when they visit tourism attraction sites such as Maletsunyane Falls in Semonkong, which is the highest waterfall in the world with a single drop.
He thanked the Basotho Enterprises Development Corporation (BEDCO) in partnership with the Private Sector Competitiveness and Economic Diversification Programme and the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture for jointly implementing the Creative Industries Empowerment Project to promote entrepreneurship engaged in creative industries in the country such as crafts and other creative art that Basotho have.
The project is also intended to empower artists in a wide range of areas such as pottery, handicrafts, jewellery, woodwork to mention a few while seeking to expose entrepreneurs in these fields to local, regional and international markets.
