Title race not over

MASERU (TNS)-The City Boys, Matlama have not given up on their 2017/18 Econet Premier League title ambitions despite having started the season badly.

This comes after defeating Quthing-based club 3-1 on Sunday in a match played at the Lesotho Correctional Service Ground.

Matlama was the only team to score more than two goals over the weekend. Motebang Sera scored the opener for “Tse Putsoa” and teammate Jane Thabantso scored the second.

Tse Putsoa created numerous goal attempts, but they were wasteful in front of goal.

The result sees Matlama climbing to third position with 25 points, same points as the Teyateyaneng-based outfit, Lioli. “Tse Nala” only lead on goal deference.

Bantu “A Matso Matebele” maintain their grip on top of the log standings with 30 points. All the teams have played 13 games each.

Matlama have for at least five league games without defeat since coach Mosito Matela took over as Head Coach. However, they had hiccups with electing the new Executive Committee along the way, but eventually, the Matlama supporters extended the period in office of the current committee.

The winning performances have seen the Matlama fans flocking to the grounds to rally behind their team, singing celebratory songs even under heavy rains.

Matlama Head Coach, Mosito Matela said: “I have learned a lot as a developing coach from Bantu and LMPS. Now is the time I express myself with good results. I am asked to bring back those happy days and the kind of football Matlama are known for, improving the club’s position, and bag trophies.

“But like any other coach, I want to win the league. Anything is possible as one can see we are now contesting for the title. The gap between us and the log leaders is only five points and they still have to play against us. So far, I have lost two and drew three, won the rest.”

Meanwhile, in the second match played at the same venue the new comers, Sefotha-fotha held defending champions and the log leaders Bantu to a shameless goalless draw. Also, Lesotho Defence Force drew 1-1 with Likhopo on Sunday.

On Saturday, Linare ‘Tse Tala’ defeated Majantja 2-0 in a match played at the Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) Maputsoe Football Ground, Lesotho Mounted Police Services (LMPS) beat Lesotho Correctional Service (LCS) 2-1, and Sky Battalion lost 2-0 to kick4Life.
