Nkoka wins high altitude summer marathon

MOKHOTLONG – Lebenya Nkoka received a hero’s welcome at Mokhotlong Pitso ground after winning the 42.2km of Lesotho High Altitude Summer Marathon.
Speaking in an interview with LENA, Nkoka who completed the full marathon with at least 2:30 minutes and pocketed M100.000.00 as first prize money said the secret of his success relies much on athletics profession as his career.
Nkoka who boldly said there was no competition for him this year, indicated that to run a marathon requires full preparations and time management.
He said the first 21.1km of the marathon, each and every athlete was fighting for survival and maintaining the top position, but that did not create any challenge for him hence he managed to beat their performance and claimed a top spot.
Responding to what is his next target marathon, Nkoka said he is going to rest and prepare for next year marathons.
He urged other athletes to maintain good discipline if they want to win.
Also interviewed, Mamoroallo Tjoka who clinched the top position in female category of 42.2km expressed her happiness by saying she is happy to be crowned the winner and to reclaim her victory as Queen of marathon.
Tjoka who looked relaxed while running the marathon under the cloudy weather conditions, pointed out that it only took her two months and three weeks to prepare for the marathon.
She highlighted that the time she spent while serving suspension has been very fruitful as that helped her to heal her injuries.
Tjoka said although running in Mokhotlong is challenging due to steep hills and slopes, for them as local athletes it is more advantageous because they are used to the trek and that is why it becomes difficult for foreign athletes to win the marathon on consecutive years.
Meanwhile, on the male category of 21.1km half marathon Jobo Khatoane of Mokhotlong claimed the first position and won M60.000.00 while on females category Nneheng Khatala of Mohale’s Hoek out performed them.
On the other hand, on 5km development race Rammea Isotso won the first position and Mamohlasoe Lehapa on females category.
Meanwhile, Minister of Gender and Youths, Sports and Recreation Mr. Kabelo Mafura was a special guest during the marathon.
Among the key sponsors of the Lesotho High Altitude Summer Marathon for this year, includes Alliance Insurance Company, Lets’eng Diamonds, Sunday Express newspaper, Lesotho Electricity Company, Brand It and Berltex.
