Lesotho to commemorate Human Rights Day

The Ministry of Law and Constitutional affairs will join the rest of the world to commemorate Human Rights Day at the event to be held at Correctional Institution in Maseru on Sunday.

This was revealed by the Ministry’s Chief Legal Officer, Mrs Polo Chabane at the press briefing held in Maseru.

Mrs Chabane said the event; whose theme is “Stand up for human rights” is intended to raise awareness on the importance of universal declaration of human rights since its establishment in 1948.

She said on that day the country will also kick off a one year campaign to mark the upcoming 70th anniversary of the universal declaration of human rights.

She indicated that the declaration is important because the constitution of most countries including Lesotho draws their inspirations from it.

She further said the day will be commemorated on the last day of the remembrance of 16 days of activism on violence against women and children.

Mrs Chabane also said the event is being held at the correctional institution in a bid to empower inmates.

She said: “Although they have wronged members of the public, they have to be rehabilitated so that they can integrate with the society in combating crime and contributing towards the country’s economic development.”

As part of the event, the Ministry will present gifts such as sanitary pads and hair clippers to inmates.

Human Rights Day is commemorated annually on December 10. It is the day in which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
